#BookReview: After The Storm by Ava St. Pierre @wisebeautyqueen

Mental Illness carries much of a stigma even though it is 2018. Finally, people are deciding to be open about it whether they themselves struggle with it or someone they know and love.

I believe it should be openly discussed so that those who struggle with it can get the help and healing they deserve.

And so began the reason I couldn’t say no to reading Ava St. Pierre’s memoir.

She’s this prestigious beauty queen who was a pretty big deal in Texas as well as the ability to dapple in the VIP lifestyle because of her Mrs. Texas America title.

Yet, her story is definitely one for the books which is why I was glad her daughter Sheree sent it to me.

Growing up in a family of seven children, they lived a cool, calm, and collected existence. That was until the storm hit.

By storm, I am referring to her mother’s fits of rage that caused a severe accident with one of Ava’s younger brothers. These fits of rage were eventually diagnosed as amnesia, paranoia, and schizophrenia, and her father decided to raise the children as a single parent which left Ava’s birth mother to remain homeless for most of her life.

One thing I loved about the memoir is how easy it was to read despite the heaviness in topic and themes, and how Ava remained positive and used her story to showcase that no matter what anyone goes through in life, they can either sit and feel sorry for themselves or they can share their story to encourage others.

And Ava succeeds at the latter, and her story will provide hope that life gets better no matter the severity of the storm and the after effects that remain.

#BookReview: Stripping Down by Sheila Hageman @SheilaMHageman

I feel as though I’ve seen Sheila Hageman naked. I don’t mean that in a dirty sense but Sheila has let it all hang out. I’ve seen the scars from her childhood where her dad gave her little attention before she watched him and her mother divorce. I’ve watched her brazenly announce at the age of nineteen to her mother and stepfather that she was going to become an exotic dancer. I’ve laid eyes on the stretch marks from giving birth and becoming a new mother all while having to watch her mother dying.

All this raw realness reads like a conversation with a candid friend who truly understands the relief found in sharing your story to heal and help others heal. A friend who wants society to see the damage of how women feel pressured to use sex and sensuality in order to be seen, acknowledged, and believe they are loved.

Her honest memoir won’t leave you feeling cheap and uncomfortable but will make you face the truth of the matter ringing out within her words.

As a Christmas gift, I want one lucky reader/follower to experience Sheila’s struggle with excepting her body and everything that comes with being a female for yourself. To enter, visit her starting December 15 2017.

The Father Effect by John Finch will leave a mark on you and how you relate to dads everywhere

pablo114Maybe you don’t have a dad or never knew your birth father. Or maybe you had a father who created a distance between you and him because he chose work over you, the bottle over you, or strip clubs over you. No matter what may have gone on and what the relationship between you and your father is like, most people male or female have a father wound that not only deserves healing but needs a healing.

That’s where this book is something you must read if you truly are seeking a healing for your father wound. It will show you the perspective of a man who suffered with a father wound due to a tragically early absence, and it caused him to not even realize he was also neglecting his own three daughters.

pablo116.png

Once he came to terms with his own father wound, he was able to properly love his family the way God intended. After all, our heavenly father is the model of the way fathers must love and lead their family.

pablo117.png

No matter your own story, you will find pieces of it in John Finch’s own personal narrative and you will most likely shed a few tears along the way but ultimately, this book will hopefully lead you to find the overall healing we all not only deserve but so very desperately need.

There was a sense of urgency throughout the entire book. I had trouble focusing at times because the story was all-over the place. I liked the message that God’s plans always are better and go beyond anything we dream, think, or imagine.

#BookReview: ‘Pour Me A Life’ left me Drunk In Love With It’s Prose

Since venturing into writing my own memoir, I’ve fallen deep for the genre itself. Now it’s one of my favorites. I don’t know what ever made me accept this book for reading but I am so glad that it ended up in my TBR pile.

Pour Me A Life

A.A Gill

Rating: Five Out of Five Cookies

Hailing from England comes the author in his own words telling the tale of his life thus far.

At it’s worst, I didn’t agree with everything the author said throughout the book but he made me understand where he was coming from and how he felt through many a defining experiences, and I found myself making sure I was still breathing because his words stole the wind right out of my lungs in the best way.

His prolific vocabulary made me feel like I was back in college active reading a textbook that I actually wanted to read instead of active skimming.

One of my favorite lines that I personally related to as an artist I will share:

I’ve read many memoirs but this one left me addictively waiting for more.

#BookReview: One Of The Few by @jasonbladd

Some might say that last night was a night when we saw “One of The Few” become an unprecedented majority. Donald J. Trump, a political outsider, became our 45th president.

It makes many Americans feel that we are finally FREE again as a country and as a nation. Though there are still some upset people who are both shocked and in fear over the election results that don’t take effect until January 20, 2017.

Our country is only free because men and women put their life on the line for our every day freedoms. 14705699_10207479601973694_6183286360889527329_n

And it’s also the heart of Jason B Ladd’s Christian memoir, One of The Few.

Yet, if the fact that it’s Christian in genre turns you off, don’t worry this book addresses it all.

14680487_10207479604133748_6472002948053804957_n

It starts out telling Jason’s backstory but the story comes to a suspenseful and heavy-breathing pace when you read of his experiences in boot camp for the Marines as well as fighter pilot.

Yet, it showcases many worldviews and strongly defends the Christian’s worldview by sharing each side of the argument on multiple issues:

  • salvation
  • Creation theories
  • heaven and hell
  • sexual sins
  • pornography

It shares strong views with clear evidence that they are backed by the writer but in a way that makes you see exactly where he is coming from on each topic and in the end, Ladd offers each reader the chance to really come face to face with Jesus, just like he did on the battlefield.

It’s extremely good and has given me hope that a self-published book, if published with professionalism and for the right purpose, can and will succeed in a world that is crying out for hope, someone to carry their burdens, and embrace them with pure unfiltered and unconditional love.

The book is currently on sale in a specific Veteran’s day special for 2.99 on Amazon Kindle.
